Ames, IA – Derek Nanni, Yaakov Ben-David Killed in Little Wall Lake Boat Accident

Ames, IA (September 14, 2021) – Club activities at Iowa State University in Ames have been suspended following a review of a deadly boating accident earlier in the year on March 28. 

A review conducted by the U.S. Council for Athletes and various university personnel found that there was a lack of safety and health practices in place. Two crew club members were killed in an accident. The deceased victims were identified as Derek Nanni and Yaakov Ben-David. 

The members were later found to be lacking in the necessary training and experience to be on the water. Numerous other factors were found to have been involved in the deadly accident, including high winds, worsening weather, and failure to deploy a launch boat.

 An ongoing investigation into the cause of the deadly boating accident is underway.
