#1 Safety Rule for Riding a Motorcycle
RECENT COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT
A 51-year-old passenger died after being in a motorcycle-car crash in Council Bluffs last Sunday. Allegedly an elderly woman, 86, driving a Ford Edge made a left turn in front of the cycle. The passenger from Underwood, Iowa died the next Wednesday at the hospital. No alcohol and not speed were involved. Probably just a matter of either poor eyesight or just not seeing the motorcycle.
#1 ACCIDENT-AVOIDANCE SAFETY RULE FOR RIDING A MOTORCYCLE
The number one safety rule for riding a motorcycle is to realize that sooner or later this will likely happen to you. Someone will pull out when you have the right-of-way and a crash will ensue.
“According to the latest data from the Iowa Department of Transportation, 30 people have died so far this year on Iowa roads. That number is 15 fewer than at the same point in 2023. Over the last five years, an average of 350 people have been killed in statewide crashes annually.”
MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT AND ACCIDENTAL DEATH STATISTICS
According to recent statistics, motorcyclists have a 28 percent higher chance of dying due to an accident. They account for 14% of all traffic deaths. And yet motorcycles account for only 3% of registered vehicles.
I am not saying, do not ride on a motorcycle. What I am saying is, wear a helmet, slow down, when on the road keep your head on a swivel. Wear proper clothing, like leathers and eye protection with UV protection to help with the glare of the sun.
