Spirit Lake, IA – Mariah Nelson Dies in Two-Car Crash on 120th St
Spirit Lake, IA (November 14, 2021) – A Jackson woman and a child were killed following a deadly traffic accident in Spirit Lake on Saturday morning, November 13. The collision occurred at around 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of 120th Street and US-71.
Local reports revealed that 29-year-old Mariah Nelson of Jackson was driving a 2008 Hyundai eastbound on 120th Street. Nelson reportedly ran a stop sign at the intersection and collided with a 2011 GMC Sierra driven by 63-year-old Allen Weinzetl of Jackson. Both vehicles overturned and entered a ditch off the roadway.
Nelson and her one-year-old son sustained fatal injuries in the accident. Two other children in the vehicle were transported to Lakes Regional Hospital in Spirit Lake before being transferred to Sanford Hospital and University Medical Center in Sioux Falls for treatment of sustained injuries. Weinzetl and his passenger, 58-year-old Teresa Chonk, were both hospitalized.
An ongoing crash investigation is being managed by local law enforcement officials.
