Pella, IA – UPDATE: Thomas Van Vliet Injured in Semi Crash on IA-163
Pella, IA (July 3, 2021) – Local authorities have released the identities of the injured parties involved in a semi-truck accident on Wednesday, July 30, in Pella.
The Iowa State Patrol revealed that 78-year-old Thomas Harry Van Vliet of Pella was operating a John Deere tractor while pulling a mower on IA-163 at the time of impact. At around 11:22 a.m. that morning, Van Vliet was rear-ended by an eastbound semi-truck driven by 80-year-old Wallace Dean Lippard of What Cheer.
Lippard was injured in the crash and flown by helicopter to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, while Van Vliet was taken to Pella Regional Health Center by ambulance. Multiple emergency response units were on-site, and the area was closed for several hours while officials were present. An ongoing investigation into the accident is being managed by local authorities.
